The legend of Wing Chun

Worcestershire Wing Chun is pleased to welcome men and women of all ages and physiques to train with us. Developed by a woman according to legend. It is said that Wing Chun was developed in Southern China by a nun named Ng Mui and named after her first student, Yim Wing Chun. The style is scientific and simple in nature, utilising fundamental body mechanics in a manner that allows individuals to overcome opponents that are far larger or stronger than they are making it one of the best martial arts for women. The style was developed for real life use, and is therefore devastatingly effective in practical application without a reliance on physical fitness, strength or size. It is therefore well suited to anyone wishing to learn a martial art for self-defence and can be trained by both men and women to an equal standard.

Women only Wing Chun classes / Women in martial arts

We are often asked whether we run separate women's only self defence classes. The simple answer is no as we believe it to be extremely important that women practice and test their application of techniques in a way that simulates real life as much as possible. Mixed classes are therefore an important part of training (unless of course you can guarantee you will only ever be attacked by a woman!) and we encourage students to train with different partners as often as possible during classes. Whilst many schools of self defence teach that due to the nature of the attacks faced, the requirements of women's self defence are unique and distinctly different to those of male self defence, Wing Chun does not prescribe a set defence for a given attack but rather treats every attack in the same way thus allowing students to react instinctively in a self defence situation and thereby removing the need for specially tailored women's self defence classes.

Whilst many women (and men) choose Wing Chun due to its effectiveness as a self-defence style, it does bring a number of additional benefits which include the development of fitness, the promotion of internal health, increased relaxation and muscle toning.

Women in martial arts;  the words of one of our female students

"I'd always been interested in martial arts however every time I'd tried a style I had been quickly put off by the realisation that I could never really achieve equity with the men I was training with. Two years ago however I discovered Wing Chun. I'll always remember nervously attending my first class, but any concerns I had were quickly removed by the friendly and welcoming reception I received. Whilst the    initial focus of my training was on mastering the basics of punching and turning, I soon began to understand and appreciate the simple logic of the system. I also started to see how devastatingly effective it was in the hands of my seniors! I have now been training for two years, and I'm definitely addicted. I still look at my seniors with awe, however I now realise that the only barrier to me achieving that standard is time and the level of commitment I am prepared to give to my training.... being female certainly isn't going to get in the way. It's also given me an increased level of confidence and I've    made some fantastic friends!!"
